Celebrating Leadership and Building Connections: Reflections on the Inaugural Deans’ Reception

Last Wednesday, I had the honor of attending The Diversity Scholarship Foundation’s Inaugural Deans’ Reception, an inspiring evening dedicated to celebrating leadership in legal education and supporting the next generation of law students. The event, co-hosted by Erica Byrd and Neha Tannan, took place at the offices of Valentine, Austriaco & Bueschel, P.C. in Chicago — a beautiful venue that perfectly set the stage for an evening of meaningful conversations and connections.

One of the highlights of the night was honoring Hari M. Osofsky, former Dean of Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. Dean Osofsky’s contributions to legal education and her dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion were celebrated by colleagues and friends across the legal community. Listening to stories about her leadership and impact reminded me of the profound difference that visionary leaders make — not just within institutions, but in shaping the future of our profession.

Beyond the recognition and formalities, what made the evening truly memorable was the opportunity to network with fellow legal professionals who share a passion for service and justice. Throughout the night, I engaged in thought-provoking conversations about mentorship, scholarship opportunities, and how we, as members of the legal community, can continue to support aspiring lawyers from all backgrounds. These exchanges were both inspiring and energizing, reinforcing my belief in the power of collaboration and community.

I was also grateful to share this experience with my husband, Ian. Attending events like this together gives us a chance to connect not only as partners but also as professionals who value the importance of giving back and supporting initiatives that open doors for others.

The Diversity Scholarship Foundation’s mission — to provide scholarships and support to law students and other charitable causes — is one that resonates deeply with me. Events like the Deans’ Reception remind us that our work extends far beyond courtrooms and offices; it’s about investing in the future of our profession and ensuring that those who come after us have the support they need to thrive.

I left the evening feeling inspired, hopeful, and proud to be part of a community that recognizes the importance of leadership, diversity, and education. Here’s to many more events like this one, and to continuing the work of building a more inclusive legal profession — together.
