Freedom, New Beginnings, and Philippine Independence Day
June 12 marks Philippine Independence Day, a day of great significance for Filipinos around the world. It commemorates the Philippines’ declaration of independence from Spain in 1898 after more than 300 years of colonial rule and celebrates the resilience, courage, and determination of the Filipino people.
As the owner of Pinay Law and a proud Filipino American, this day holds special meaning for me.
I was born in the Philippines at Clark Air Force Base. Interestingly, it is also the birthplace of Vanessa Lachey, model and actor. She is also the Co-Host of the popular dating to marriage (and sometime to divorce) Netflix show Love is Blind with her husband, entertainer Nick Lachey. While that is a fun fact, what matters most to me is the connection I feel to my heritage and the values that Philippine Independence Day represents.
As the founder of Pinay Law, Philippine Independence Day resonates with me on a personal and professional level. While our firm focuses on family law, I often think about how our work is, in many ways, about freedom. We help people navigate the end of marriages, resolve family disputes, and take the first steps toward building a new chapter in their lives.
The Philippines spent more than 300 years under Spanish colonial rule before declaring independence on June 12, 1898. Three centuries is longer than any marriage, longer than any career, and longer than most family legacies. Yet despite the passage of time, Filipinos chose to pursue self-government and determine their own future.
That history reminds me of something I often tell clients: it is never too late for a new beginning.
Whether someone has been in an unhappy marriage for a few years or several decades, there is no expiration date on the opportunity to create a better future. Change can feel intimidating, especially when the status quo has existed for a very long time. But history teaches us that even after centuries, transformation is possible.
When Filipinos celebrate Independence Day, they are commemorating the end of more than three centuries of Spanish colonial rule, the courage of revolutionaries who fought for self-government, and the birth of the First Philippine Republic—one of the earliest republican governments in Asia. For many Filipino Americans, the holiday is also a celebration of Filipino identity, culture, resilience, and national pride.
