Lessons from the Family Law Summit: Embracing AI and Automation to Streamline Our Practice

I recently had the opportunity to speak at the Family Law Summit (Zoom Summit), where I shared insights on a topic close to my heart: AI & Automation in Family Law: Streamline Intake, Docs, and Strategy.” It was an inspiring event that brought together practitioners passionate about improving how we serve families—smarter, faster, and more efficiently.

During my presentation, I emphasized that intake is more than just data collection. It’s the first impression clients have of your law firm—an essential part of the sales process. Whether you assign intake to a dedicated sales team or handle it yourself, the key is intentionality: decide who should be the first point of contact and equip them to reflect your firm’s values and professionalism.

I also discussed how AI can transform the way we approach intake and client service. Tools like chatbots can help gather client information, while AI-assisted research helps staff respond quickly to questions. However, I reminded everyone that while technology can enhance efficiency, it cannot replace empathy—the human connection remains at the heart of family law.

Automation was another focus of my talk. Intake is especially ripe for automation—firms can automate reminders, create workflows, and even pre-fill forms after collecting data. These systems don’t just save time; they reduce human error and allow staff to focus on what truly matters: helping clients.

Before closing, I offered three practical recommendations for firms ready to modernize their practice:

  1. Build a Sales Team. Consider outsourcing intake to trained professionals abroad. If you’re doing intake yourself, make sure your attorney team can handle billable work while you focus on sales.
  2. Build Clear Procedures and Instructions for Clients. Your sales process should be easy for clients to understand and implemented consistently across your team.
  3. Automate, Automate, Automate. Explore the many tools and consultants available to help your firm run more smoothly.

At Pinay Law, we’ve seen firsthand how these principles have fueled our growth this year. By strengthening our intake systems, implementing automation tools, and building a supportive team structure, we’ve been able to serve more clients efficiently—without sacrificing the personal attention each family deserves. Our tech-driven approach has not only improved productivity but has also deepened our client relationships, allowing us to stay both high-tech and high-touch.

Speaking at the Family Law Summit was a meaningful reminder that innovation and compassion can go hand in hand. Technology doesn’t replace what we do—it empowers us to do it better.
